What we are:
Bonteh Magazine is an Africa-focused publication and intelligence company covering governance, business, technology, and media across the continent and its relationship with the rest of the world.
The magazine isn’t built to be a news aggregator nor a content platform. We are an editorially independent, Africa-rooted media and intelligence company producing journalism that holds power accountable and intelligence that helps institutions act on what they understand. Our asset is this: Trust and analytical credibility that rigorous, independent journalism builds with a high-value professional audience.
We are a publication of ideas—a place where serious analysis meets rigorous reporting and where the complexity of African governance, technology, and business is treated with the intellectual respect it deserves.
Our Editorial Pillars:
We publish across five areas:
Governance & Public Affairs — Investigations, policy analysis, electoral reporting, and institutional accountability. We hold power accountable, regardless of who holds it.
Technology & AI — Tech ecosystem reporting, AI adoption analysis, digital rights, and infrastructure. We document Africa's digital transformation honestly, including the parts that are not working.
Business & Economy — Market analysis, trade and investment reporting, and corporate accountability. We write for the investor and the professional, not for the press release.
Media & Communications — Press freedom, media economics, narrative power, and the PR industry. We interrogate the communications landscape from the inside.
Africa-World Affairs — Africa policy, diaspora affairs, bilateral relations, and development finance. Because the Africa-World relationship shapes more of the continent's economic and political future than most coverage acknowledges.
The Six Founding Principles / VALUES
I. Independence
Our journalism serves our readers and our public mission. It does not serve the commercial interests of our parent company, our advertisers, our funders, or our founding team. Independence is not a policy position we adopt when convenient, it is the precondition for everything else in this document.
II. Accuracy
We publish only what we can verify. Every factual claim in our editorial content has a documented, checkable source. We are more willing to be late than to be wrong. We are more willing to publish less than to publish inaccurately. Accuracy is the foundation of trust, and trust is the only currency we trade in.
III. Accountability
We hold the powerful accountable; governments, corporations, institutions, and individuals who exercise public power or spend public resources. We apply that standard regardless of their nationality, political alignment, relationship to our parent company, or standing in the communities we serve. No person is too important to be scrutinised. No institution is too sympathetic to be questioned.
IV. Fairness
We give every person and institution the right to respond to allegations or criticisms before we publish them. We represent all sides of a genuinely contested issue. We distinguish clearly between our editorial judgement and established fact. We do not use the power of publication to pursue personal vendettas or settle institutional scores.
V. Context
Africa's story is systematically stripped of context in global media. We refuse to replicate that failure. Every piece we publish provides the historical, political, and cultural context that makes it comprehensible and meaningful. We do not write for an audience assumed to be unfamiliar with Africa. We write for an audience that lives it.
VI. Courage
We publish stories that need to be published even when they are uncomfortable, contested, or likely to generate pressure. We do not self-censor because a story implicates a powerful government, a major advertiser, or a member of our own group. Journalism that only covers safe ground is not journalism. It is content.
